Beyond the Hālau: Culture, Community & Service

Kumu Leilani’s dedication to cultural perpetuation extends beyond the walls of the hālau.

Following a successful tattoo apprenticeship under Faufano Sagapolu, she established The Black Lei Tattoo LLC, a business dedicated to the practice, education, and perpetuation of Polynesian tattoo traditions.

The studio serves as more than a place of business. It is a space for cultural expression, fellowship, employment, mentorship, and the continuation of Polynesian tattoo artistry.

As a devoted Christian, Kumu Leilani also finds great joy and fulfillment in serving as a worship leader at Sound Life Church’s Lakewood Campus, part of the Assemblies of God fellowship.

Her faith remains central to her leadership and the values she encourages within both the hālau and tattoo studio. In recognition of the importance of worship, family, and rest, both organizations are encouraged to observe Sundays as a day of Sabbath.

Continuing the Journey Through Education

Kumu Leilani remains committed to lifelong learning and the continued study of Hawaiian culture.

She is currently pursuing her college education through the University of Hawaiʻi’s Hawaiʻiloa Program at Ke Kulanui Kaʻaipuni ʻO Koʻolau (Windward Community College).

Her academic focus is Hawaiian and Pacific Studies, with an emphasis on ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, the Hawaiian language. She anticipates completing her degree in June 2028.

Her dedication to education reflects her belief that cultural knowledge carries both privilege and responsibility. As a kumu, student, business owner, and community leader, she continues to seek opportunities to grow in knowledge while serving others.
